Minds of BCG

Craig Geoff Howes and Barbara Matthews are both medical doctors with master’s degrees in palliative medicine. Their clinical experience spans more than 28 years across public, private and NGO-based palliative care. They are involved formally and professionally in health care education and mentorship.

Their partnership began in 2023 with the question: is the traditional in person MDT the only way to provide palliative care? They deconstructed this well-worn path to palliative care to develop the @pcPM thought experiment model and co-authored the Virutal Palliative Care Handbook (now in its 2nd edition) – a guide to using telehealth in palliative care, as one solution to access constraints. The work and projects they share have allowed Craig Geoff and Barbara to disrupt, advocate and problem solve within the context of the South African healthcare space in broader issues relating to access and person-centered and context-located health care.

Craig Geoff and Barbara share a common goal to reimagine their corner of healthcare, drawing on personal experience and expertise, while acknowledging their own place of privilege. They believe that kindness and authenticity matter a great deal.
